Over the past two years a group of racers in Denver Colo. performed several series
of tests at a chassis dyno to get not only the best performance. But meet the ever
changing SOUND Meter readings, the dreaded DB Monster!!! With the ever changing climate
and sites we can run on the group ended up testing the latest stuff from
Flowmaster,Kerker,Supertrapp,Dynomax, and the ever popular Thrush. This test was always
run with a mix of 4,6,8 cyl cars with switchable mounts on the exhaust systems. What we
came up with is SuperTrapps are great street mufflers but to loud to meet the DB stuff.
The Thrush stuff ended up pulling down the performance on all but one car on any given
day. The last three all perfomed fine, some would run better numbers on performance or
sound reading depending what car they were on. None by more than a half a point to a point
difference. The db mark we were trying to stay under was 95db which all three did on all
the cars tested. This kind of testing is going to need to be performed more in the future
as communities and our favorite sanctioning bodies try to keep the outside world
happy. Just some thoughts from the right coast. (Pat Collins - Huntersville,NC)

Thanks to Brendan Parrott (www.bre510.com) for this info.
I find three different springs were used on the
T'Birds between 1984 and 1986 that ought to be of interest;
The standard spring is a 3.5" x .640" x 15" @ 415#/",
The AC car spring is a 3.5" x .640" x 15.4" @ 415#/",
The SVO/Turbo one is a 3.5" x .650" x 15.1" @ 462#/".
For comparisons;
Stock 510 springs are 3.6" x .563" x 11.7" @ 316#/",
"Euro" 510 springs are 3.6" x .563" x 10" @ 440#/",
Cut down Mitsu's are 3.7" x .??? x 10" @ 440#/",
Nissan competitions are 3.6" x .610" x 10"? @ 670#/".
If we cut down the Ford springs to 10", we ought to see numbers like;
Standards 625#/",
SVO/Turbos 700#/".
Remember to factor the 3.8 to 4.0 motion ratio in to get wheel rate and a comparison to
your front springs. Also, the exact cut height will be very critical and you will likely
need to be very precise to get them just right. Ride height and corner weight variations
follow that same 3.8x factor! A 9" cut will lower the car 4", generally way too
much!

Q) I was wondering what a good weight for a

Porsche 944
seats
(By Dave - 72
Datsun 510 3.5 V-8)
The seats I got are very easy to install and require only minimal
modifications to install them in a 510. The following is a description of
the install.
The seats I used are from a 1985 Porsche 944. The stock 510 seats mount to
seat risers that attach to the floor and to the front seat support. The
stock 510 risers requires no modifications (so if you ever want to go back
to stock you can)
The stock seats have a bolt pattern as follows: 16inches apart from side to
side (from center to center of mounting holes) 12 1/2 inches apart from
front to back (from center to center of mounting holes)
The Porsche seats have a bolt patterns that is very close to the 510. The
side to side measurement is the same. The distance between the front and
rear holes measures 12inches (from center to center of mounting holes)
To install the Porsche seats, Remove your stock seats. Leave the seat risers
in place.
Remove the rails from the Porsche seats. The rails are easily removable by
removing the 4 allen head screws on the bottom. Once you remove the rails
you can just drill new holes the proper distance apart. This will require
drilling 4 new holes in each seat. All you need to do is drill the new holes
in the mounting rails so they are 12 1/2 inches apart.( I no longer have any
stock seats so I don't know if you can just put the stock sliders on the new
seats or not.) Install the modified rails back on the seats and install them
on the stock 510 seat risers.
The seats fit in nicely and provide a much more comfortable seat than the
stock seats. They sit at a good height (your arm can rest nicely on the
door) and there is plenty of head room. They recline and seem to go back far
enough for even a very tall person. They look good in a 510.
I'm sure that there are plenty of these in the JY. I hope this helps some of
you out there. if you have any questions about the install, you can email me

Door
hinge repair
Went hunting for repair kits for the hinges and came
up with two specifically for Nissans and a universal kit that should also work. All
kits had bronze bushings

Universal
HELP by Motormite PN 38400 One pin & 4 bushings $4.00
Bushing applications listed are 84-60 GM cars & trucks.
Pin application 84-73 GM cars & trucks.
This kit has 2 sets of bushings, one is oversized OD for worn hinges.
Bushing ID 5/16" (.312")
Bushing OD 13/32" (.406")
Pin OD 5/16" (.312")
The oversized bushings have knurling on the OD. You could remove the knurling with a file
or other method to have 2 sets of bushings for the price of 1 set in the Nissan kits.
From the packaging, I'd guess the NAPA and HELP are packed by the same supplier.
The HELP brand is sold by Pep Boys and AutoZone, and maybe more
You probably won't use the pins. The NAPA and HELP Nissan kit pins are 2.85" long,
the HELP universal pin is 4-1/8", If your pins are too worn, you could cut the kit
pins to length and bevel the end like the OEM pin.
The repair is straight forward. Put hinge in heavy vise and drive out the pin from the
tapered end side. If your lower hinge still has the spring in it, you will have to be
creative to compress the spring. Maybe a valve spring compresser tool. All the hinges that
I have overhauled didn't have the spring left. Remove the plastic bushing renmants and
clean the corrosion out of the holes with a round file. Clean the corrosion off the pin. I
used crocus cloth. Press the two bushings in using a heavy C-clamp. Or use a 1/4"
bolt with 2 washers and a nut.
Swab the inside of the bushings with bearing grease and reinstall the pin. |
